In the first decades of the 21st century Australia has become one of the world’s most decentralised electricity systems. However, pricing structures designed for the mid 20th century are failing to efficiently encourage the valuable services that our millions of DERs could provide to the grid. Instead, traditional tariffs drive inequity and can overcompensate DER even when they impose costs on the grid rather than shared benefits.
V-DER tariffs (value of distributed energy resources) provide a tangible and achievable solution. V-DER tariffs are designed to provide a financial incentive for DER owners and operators that enable their resources to serve both their own needs and provide useful services to the wider power system. Importantly, V-DER tariffs must reward the right DER services, at the right time and at the right location. Typically these services will be in the form of the ‘3 Rs’: real power, reactive power and reserves.
In this webinar Strategen Chief Strategy Officer Mark Paterson and Director Ron Nelson will share experiences to provide an overview of V-DER tariffs and examples of how they are being applied in the United States, including in New York and Hawaii.
An opportunity for Q&A relevant to the Australian context will be provided at the conclusion of each 40-minute presentation.
This is a live re-cast of the V-DER Tariffs webinar of late February for any who were unable to attend.
